Help for vertigo and dizziness in Victoria

Your vestibular system, in the inner ear, works with your eyes and neck to keep you balanced. When something goes wrong, you can feel like the room is spinning, feel unsteady on your feet or get dizzy when you turn your head. Many of these problems respond well to vestibular rehab. At Diversified Health, vestibular physiotherapist Kanu Priya, MPT, who has completed post-graduate vestibular training, works with chiropractors Dr. Tessa Bryan and Dr. Alexia Grelson to assess and treat dizziness.

Conditions we help with

  • BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo): brief spinning when you roll over in bed, look up or bend down
  • Dizziness after a concussion or whiplash
  • Vestibular neuritis and labyrinthitis, after the acute phase
  • Dizziness related to the neck (cervicogenic dizziness)
  • Balance problems and fear of falling

How vestibular rehab works

  1. A full assessment of your symptoms, eye movements, balance, positional testing and neck.
  2. Targeted treatment. For BPPV, this is often a repositioning maneuver that can bring quick relief.
  3. Exercises to retrain your balance and help your brain adapt, with a home program you can do between visits.
  4. Neck treatment when neck stiffness or injury is adding to the dizziness. See neck pain and headaches.

When to go to the emergency department

Get emergency care right away if dizziness comes with sudden weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, a drooping face, sudden vision loss, a severe headache, chest pain or fainting. These can be signs of a stroke or heart problem.

Vertigo and dizziness FAQs

Can vertigo be treated without medication?

Often, yes. BPPV, the most common cause of vertigo, is usually treated with a simple repositioning maneuver. Other types respond to vestibular exercises.

How many visits will I need?

BPPV sometimes improves in one to a few visits. Other problems, like dizziness after a concussion, usually take longer.

Should I see a physio or a chiropractor for dizziness?

Both Kanu and our chiropractors Dr. Tessa Bryan and Dr. Alexia Grelson treat dizziness. Book with any of them and they’ll work together if needed.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly, and we bill most extended health plans and ICBC directly.
