Help for bursitis in Victoria

A bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that cushions tendons and muscles where they pass over bone. Bursitis is when it becomes irritated. It often comes with tendon problems nearby, especially at the hip and shoulder. It can make it hard to sleep on your side, reach overhead or walk comfortably. Most cases settle with the right mix of treatment, load management and strengthening.

Common places for bursitis

  • Outer hip (trochanteric bursitis): pain on the side of the hip, worse lying on that side or climbing stairs
  • Shoulder (subacromial bursitis): pain lifting your arm or reaching behind you
  • Elbow (olecranon bursitis): swelling at the back of the elbow
  • Knee (prepatellar bursitis): swelling at the front of the knee, common with kneeling

Common causes

  • Repetitive movement or pressure, like kneeling or leaning on the elbows
  • A quick increase in activity
  • Weak hip or shoulder muscles
  • A fall or direct blow

How we treat bursitis

  • Physiotherapy. Strengthening for the hip or shoulder, hands-on treatment and advice on positions that ease pain.
  • Chiropractic care. Treatment for the joint and the areas above and below it, plus soft tissue work.
  • Shockwave and laser therapy for stubborn pain, especially at the hip and shoulder.
  • Massage therapy for the surrounding muscles.
  • Kinesiology. A guided exercise program to keep it from coming back.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor promptly if the area is red, hot and swollen, or you have a fever. These can be signs of an infected bursa, which needs medical care.

Bursitis FAQs

How long does bursitis last?

Many cases improve within a few weeks with the right care. Hip and shoulder pain that has been there a long time can take longer.

Should I rest it completely?

Usually not. Easing off the activities that aggravate it while strengthening the area tends to work better than complete rest.

Can I sleep on the painful side?

It often hurts. A pillow between the knees or under the arm can help while it settles. We’ll give you tips at your visit.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly, and we bill most extended health plans directly.
