Help for plantar fasciitis in Victoria

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The thick band of tissue under your foot, the plantar fascia, gets irritated from overload. It often hurts most with your first steps in the morning or after sitting. Most people get better with the right treatment and a few changes to how they load the foot. Our team on Fort St can help you get there faster.

Signs of plantar fasciitis

  • Sharp or aching pain at the bottom of your heel or along your arch
  • Pain that’s worst with your first steps in the morning, then eases
  • Pain that returns after standing a long time or getting up from sitting
  • Pain that’s worse after exercise, not during it

Common causes

  • A quick jump in running, walking or standing
  • Tight calves or a stiff ankle
  • Worn-out or unsupportive footwear
  • Foot shape, such as flat feet or high arches
  • Long hours standing on hard floors

How we treat plantar fasciitis

  • Physiotherapy. A loading and stretching program for your foot and calf, hands-on treatment and dry needling.
  • Shockwave therapy. A non-invasive treatment often used for stubborn heel pain that hasn’t settled with other care.
  • Custom orthotics. Assessed and fitted by our chiropractors to take pressure off the heel and arch.
  • Chiropractic care. Treatment for the foot, ankle and the joints above them, plus Graston soft tissue work.
  • Massage therapy for tight calf and foot muscles.
  • Acupuncture for pain relief.

Runners: see our page on running injuries, including gait analysis.

Plantar fasciitis FAQs

How long does plantar fasciitis take to heal?

Many people improve within a few weeks to a few months with the right loading program. Stubborn cases can take longer, which is when shockwave therapy or orthotics are often added.

Do I need orthotics?

Not always. We’ll check your feet and footwear first. If orthotics would help, our chiropractors can assess and fit custom ones.

Should I stop running or walking?

Usually you don’t need to stop completely. We’ll help you adjust how much you do so the foot can settle while you stay active.

Is treatment covered by insurance?

Physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage are covered by most extended health plans, and we bill Blue Cross, Medavie Blue Cross and TELUS Health network insurers directly. Many plans also cover custom orthotics.
