Help for TMJ and jaw pain in Victoria

Your temporomandibular joints (TMJs) connect your jaw to your skull, just in front of your ears. When the joint or the chewing muscles around it are irritated, you can get jaw pain, clicking, headaches and trouble opening your mouth. Clenching, grinding and neck tension often play a part. Hands-on treatment and simple exercises help many people, and we’ll work alongside your dentist if you have one involved.

Signs of a TMJ disorder

  • Pain in the jaw, face or in front of the ear
  • Clicking, popping or grating when you open or close your mouth
  • Trouble opening wide, or a jaw that feels stuck
  • Headaches, especially around the temples
  • Sore jaw muscles in the morning from clenching or grinding

Common causes

  • Clenching or grinding your teeth, often linked to stress
  • Neck and upper back tension, and forward-head posture
  • Injury, including whiplash from a car accident
  • Chewing gum or hard foods a lot

How we treat TMJ disorders

  • Chiropractic care. Gentle jaw mobilization, soft tissue work and treatment of the neck.
  • Physiotherapy. Jaw and neck exercises, hands-on treatment and dry needling for tight chewing muscles.
  • Registered massage therapy for the jaw, neck and shoulder muscles.
  • Acupuncture for pain and tension relief.
  • Habit and posture advice, including ways to reduce daytime clenching.

Jaw pain often goes hand in hand with neck pain and headaches. If yours started after a car accident, see our ICBC injury page.

TMJ FAQs

Should I see a dentist or a chiropractor or physio for jaw pain?

Both can help. Dentists look after your teeth and bite and can make night guards. We treat the joint, muscles and neck. Many people do best with both.

Is jaw clicking a problem?

Clicking without pain is common and often harmless. If it comes with pain, locking or trouble opening your mouth, it’s worth an assessment.

Can TMJ cause headaches?

Yes. Tight jaw and neck muscles are a common cause of headaches around the temples.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly, and we bill most extended health plans directly.
